Application for
Confirmation of Descent

The Townsville Aboriginal & Islander Health Service (TAIHS) Board takes the responsibility of verifying descent with utmost seriousness.

The Board will only consider applications in which the applicant’s family heritage is known and where all eligibility criterias are met.

This approach has been adopted because such requests typically aim to establish eligibility for services and opportunities that are exclusively available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals.

Descent eligibility – to meet this criterion, the applicant must be able to satisfy all parts of the following definition:

  • Descent – The applicant must provide evidence that at least one parent is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. In most cases, a ‘Family Tree’ is required.
  • Known to the BoardIf the TAIHS Board lacks direct knowledge of the applicant or their family heritage, the Confirmation of Descent application will not be approved.
  • Self-IdentificationThe applicant must self-identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Community RecognitionThe applicant must be recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander by members of the local Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.
  • Locational EligibilityThe applicant’s family heritage must originate from the geographical area of Far North Queensland

Please Note: If your family heritage originates from outside the Townsville Region, it is advisable to seek confirmation from a relevant local Indigenous organisation in the geographical area of your family’s origin.

  • The application must be thoroughly completed.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit all necessary documentation to demonstrate compliance with the Confirmation of Descent criteria.
  • If the documentation is deemed insufficient, the application will not be reviewed by the TAIHS Board and will be returned with a request for additional information and completion.
  • The decision regarding Confirmation of Descent rests solely with the TAIHS Board of Directors.
