The Maternal and Child Health unit provides a multi-disciplinary health service for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, children, mothers and babies.
The Maternal and Child Health team’s role is to support the health of women, babies and children through midwifery support, health advice throughout pregnancy and beyond, child health checks, vaccinations and immunisations, ear health and family planning.
Services include:
- Women’s health information, screening, assessment and treatments
- Child and Adult Health Checks and care planning
- Antenatal care (Antenatal services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team including Doctors, Indigenous Health Practitioners, Child Health Nurses and a Midwife)
- Midwifery service (provided by a Qld Health Midwife Tuesday and Thursday by appointment only)
- Pregnancy nutrition advice
- Birthing information
- Breastfeeding advice
- Postnatal care (Postnatal services are provided for mothers and babies at six weeks including an assessment for both mum and bub, and immunisations for newborns.
- National Immunisation Program is provided by a Child Health Nurse, bookings are essential please call to arrange an appointment
- Growth monitoring and early childhood development screening
- Parenting support and guidance (partners are also encouraged to participate in their child’s health care appointments)
- Visiting Specialist Paediatrician , Every Thursday 9:00am – 12:00pm and Friday 9:00am – 3:30pm, GP Referral is required
Please note:
All parents are encouraged to bring their Child Health Record Book and their Medicare Card with them to each visit. Pregnant women are encouraged to bring their pregnancy hand held record with them to each visit.

Health Services
Our team are always available to have a yarn about your women’s health needs and goals, please feel welcome to ask about other services available to you; for example, PAP Smears, Breast screening, Sexual Health Checks.
Our team can also assist you with social and emotional issues, fertility, pre-pregnancy planning, pregnancy testing, pregnancy, contraception, menopause and other Women’s Business.
What is Immunisation?
Immunisation is a simple and effective way of protecting children against serious diseases that can cause children to end up in hospital and to have serious ongoing health problems. Immunisation also stops the spread of diseases within a community.

- Whooping cough (pertussis)
- Measles / Mumps / German Measles
- Meningococcal C
- Pneumococcal disease
- Chickenpox
- Tetanus / Diphtheria
- Polio
- Rotavirus
- Hepatitis
Hearing Health Services
Good hearing makes life a lot better for learning and understanding, but sometimes children may have trouble hearing. Having a child’s hearing checked early is best to identify any problems and have them addressed as soon as possible.
TAIHS Doctors and Health Practitioners perform hearing health screening for:
- Children 0-5 Years (Doctors refer to Australian Hearing and
Binna Clinic for specialised testing and assessment) - School aged children
- Adults
- Hepatitis
Follow up treatment and care is available and referrals may be made to appropriate specialists for further treatment.
Services include:
- Otoscopy to examine the inner ear
- Tympanometry to test the middle ear function
- Audiometry to measure how well a person can actually hear
- Education and health promotion linked to healthy ears and
ear care - Referrals to Audiologists and Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists
